Like I mentioned in my announcement of the TDC Medal 2014 for contemporary type design powerhouse David Berlow, mid-July was a week of both celebration and sadness in the world of type design and typography. On Tuesday, July 15 Swiss type designer Hans Eduard Meier passed away peacefully, aged 91. If his name doesn’t immediately ring a bell, the name of his typeface certainly will be familiar. Syntax is one of the best-known sans serif typefaces. At Home With Lukas Schneider

GÅ TILL FONTFONT »lukas schneider

We recently popped over to Frankfurt am Main to pay a visit to  FF Utility designer Lukas Schneider for our latest installment of the ‘At Home With’ series.

For those poor ugly letters, I feel pity and sadness.

These didn’t fit anywhere in the trajectory of In Letters We Trust, my recent presentation at TypeCon 2014. But still, I couldn’t leave them just laying about.

These banknotes were issued by the North African nation of Mauritania between 1974 and 2004, and were printed by the German security firm Giesecke & Devrient. They offer dazzling color and pattern, but also make an excellent example of design for a set. They find the precarious balance of unity and diversity, where each piece has a distinct identity but is unmistakably part of a larger group.
