Extra Condensed is a little letterpress newspaper, of sorts. The (very) occasional publication of work, musings and typographic meanderings from The Counter Press.
It’s a long time since newspapers were printed by letterpress. Today this antiquated process is typically the reserve of limited edition prints and fine press books.
This is issue No.1
It has been painstakingly designed, typeset & printed entirely by hand, using only moveable wood and metal type. The aim was to use this traditional, and now fairly exclusive process, to create a contemporary and accessible piece of editorial design.
The first issue is a compact 8 pages, printed in two colours in an edition of 150 copies; made from over 1350 individually hand-pulled impressions.Today’s fine printing, tomorrow’s chip paper.
About The Counter Press
The Counter Press is a letterpress workshop based in an old chocolate factory in London’s East End. Somewhere between a graphic design studio and a traditional private press, we work exclusively with hand set wood and metal type to create new typographic design, artwork, books and printed matter.
