I love letters. All kinds and types of letters: small, large, drawn, sketched, painted, rough, smooth, serif, sans serif, script, roman, italic, oblique, digitized, old and new, uppercase, lowercase, all materials and media, three dimensional… Yes, I love letters, except for those that are poorly or incorrectly proportioned. For those poor ugly letters, I feel pity and sadness.

These didn’t fit anywhere in the trajectory of In Letters We Trust, my recent presentation at TypeCon 2014. But still, I couldn’t leave them just laying about.

These banknotes were issued by the North African nation of Mauritania between 1974 and 2004, and were printed by the German security firm Giesecke & Devrient. They offer dazzling color and pattern, but also make an excellent example of design for a set. They find the precarious balance of unity and diversity, where each piece has a distinct identity but is unmistakably part of a larger group.

Adelaide Fringe 2015 Poster Design Competition

Adelaide Fringe , an annual open-access arts festival in South Australia, is calling on artists and graphic designers worldwide to submit designs for the 2015 Poster Competition.
Unlike a curated festival, the open-access nature of Adelaide Fringe means that anyone with a show, exhibition or cultural event is able to register and be part of Australia’s largest arts event. The result is one of the most diverse arts festivals in the world, renowned for fresh ideas, spontaneity and fun.The theme for this year’s Poster Competition is ” Experience Something New ”.
