FRÅN Frere-Jones »Back when my friends were reading Dune and The Hobbit, I was reading this. It’s one of the type books I fished out of trash cans at the advertising agencies where my dad worked. It listed every design available at one of New York’s many typesetting houses. Sober and loopy and everything between, all in tiny smudgy letters. I couldn’t say why these books were so riveting, but I kept looking anyway.

I decided that if I ever had the job to pick these myself, I would never use “Fuchsia” for anything ever, because it’s just plain silly.

But I was sure that “Noodles” was a multi-dimensional work of genius because — well, just look at it.
